Sugar Levels after Exercise

Dr. Albana,

Is it true that sugar levels when checked immediately after exercise, say by a home meter, will be on the higher side as compared to normal or pre-exercise levels?

Hello Varun,

Thank you for your question.

Yes, you are right, blood sugar levels are increased immediately after a physical activity or exercise.

This is because, your muscles need energy to complish this exercise/duty.
This energy is provided by using glucose. So, the more the muscles will move, the more energy they require, the more glucose is put inside the bloodstream to fullfill their needs.

That's why we do not recommend to measure blood pressure immediately after an exercise as we will get a false result.

You can make your own tests if you want.
Take a snack before going for a physical activity. Measure your blood glucose before exercising, while you are exercising, immediately after exercise and 2 hours after exercise, record the results and send to me.

Or, at least you can evaluate the changes yourself.

Do not forget to drink plenty of water especially 20 minutes after exercise, but not immediately.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if you have any other concern.
