Question:
My blood sugar is often high, sometimes up to 306 mg/dL. My diet includes cassava flour, wheat flour, beans, fish, and rice.
For the last two months, I have noticed a reduced sex drive and poorer sexual performance. This is causing me a lot of concern.
What can I do to regain normal sexual function?
Answer from Dr. Albana Greca
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Let me review all your current health problems and try to help you as follows:
A blood sugar level of 306 mg/dL is significantly elevated; we classify it among dangerous sugar levels. This means your diabetes is not being controlled adequately. So, your first top priority is to get good control of your blood sugar.
1. Work toward better blood sugar control
First, I would suggest revising your current medications and respective dosages. In this regard, I'd like to ask to know the medications you are currently taking, including those for diabetes or for any other health problems you might have.
You should track your blood sugar levels daily, keep a diary (a type of blood sugar levels log), and show it to your caring doctor to understand the fluctuations in your blood glucose during the day.
2. Review your diet
3. Stay physically active
Regular physical activity may help improve blood sugar control, circulation, energy levels, and sexual health.
Having persistent high blood sugar puts you at higher risk for diabetes complications, including those related to sexual health.
Over time, diabetes may damage blood vessels and nerves that are important for sexual function. High blood sugar can also affect energy levels, mood, sleep, hormone balance, and overall well-being. Altogether, they will make sexual function worse.
As it has persisted for two months now, if your blood sugar is repeatedly above 300 mg/dL, if you have symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, vomiting, weakness, or dehydration, or if sexual problems continue despite improved blood sugar control.
Many people notice improvement in sexual function when blood sugar levels are brought closer to their target range and other contributing factors are addressed.
