Smuckers jam diabetes

QUESTION: I love to eat jam, but i have diabetes since 5 years now.

I read on the smuckers jam label that it contains glucose and fructose.

Do you think they will raise my blood sugar levels?

Can I eat small amounts, let's say 15 grams per day (which contain 13 grams of sugar per day); is this too much?

ANSWER: Hi there,

It is very good that you are trying to follow a healthy diet, because this thing is a very important part of the diabetic treatment.

However, I have to inform you that you are supposed to count the carbohydrates amount and not only the glucose amount.

Yes, it is true that glucose is a simple carbohydrate, but there are other molecules, which are transformed into glucose during the metabolic processes.

So, in purpose to avoid diabetes complications you have to watch out the exact number of carbs acquired per day.

In purpose to be easier for you, I will mention that diabetic has to eat not more than 60gram and not less than 40 of carbs per meal. That makes around 160-240 grams of carbs per day, if you eat 4 times a day.

Because of this, eating 15 grams of jam, which are containing around 13gram of sugar per day, is not too much for you.

However, you have to calculate the exact number of carbs in the other meals of yours.

Keep up with the good work and I’m open for other questions of yours. I hope that you are controlling your diabetes well.
