Metformin is recommended to take after meals. This is upon how metformin works:
1. Inhibit the absorption of sugar from food (in intestines).
2. Activates insulin receptors in your body cells (muscles and fat cells); thus enhancing the glucose entering in these cells and consequently, clearing your bloodstream from glucose.
3. Send "stop" signals to your liver to not produce anymore glucose.
Taking into account the metformin (and biguanides in general) functions, it is advised to take it after meal, not only for type 2 diabetics, but also for those with insulin resistance.
