by: Alba

First of all Reglan is not a hypoglycemic drug. It is not used to lower blood sugar levels. It is used for peptic (stomach) and reflux and heartburn problems and for Diabetes Gastroparesis. Its generic name is Metoclopramide.

Reglan (metoclopramide) has its own side effects, like all the drugs. That's why many lawsuits problems have raised to its side effects. The most problematic issue is tardive dyskinesia ( involuntary movements of your body - extremities, tongue, face, etc).

Last year, FDA has announced Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia Warnings, related to long term usage of reglan. Also FDA recommends the pharmaceutical companies to clearly write down the risks of using Metoclopramide composed drugs (such as Reglan) in order for the patients to know better the risks.

Other side effects include: Cerebrovascular side effects (CNS, Extra pyramidal Reactions, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, etc)

Gastrointestinal: nausea, bowl movements problems, diarrhea

Cardiovascular: blood pressure disorders, heart rhythm disorders, etc

Kidneys: urinary incontinence and frequency

Liver: hepatotoxicity

Endocrine: hyperprolactinemia and related problems

Allergic reactions: urticaria, bronchospasm, rash, rarely angioneurotic edema

Hematologic: agranulocytosis, leuokopenia, neutropenia, etc.

That's why it is extremely important to discuss with your doctor before using it.
