High reading of blood sugar levels!

by Anonimous

QUESTION: What happens if your reading is 1275? I was told if it gets that high you would be in a diabetic coma or dead. Is that true?

ANSWER: Hi there,

Actually, your blood glucose level of 1275 is very very high. The person who told you that with these figures you'd be in coma or dead is right. The normal blood sugar reading is between 80 - 120. You may see how high it is.

But, I would like to ask you to redo the test. If the result above is from a test you made at home, most probably:

- it's something wrong with your blood sugar test machine. Every machine has a control-test liquid. Try to clean your glucose-meter, then do the control-test and see what happens. For any inquiry you should look at the instruction pamphlet.

- if after performing the control-test, everything is ok, you should do a lab test (using a central vein) and consult your doctor.

Good luck and take care!

Dr.Alba

High blood sugar count
by: Alba

Hi Hozefa,

I understand your concern. First, I want to make it clear: there exist two systems of units for blood sugar levels (mg/dl and mmol/l).

The blood levels of 7 or 8 you are referring to are according to mmol/l; whilst my reference 80-120 was according to mg/dl. They show the same thing, but in different units.

You can learn how to convert mg/dl in mmol/l by clicking here.

So, I hope you will not be confused anymore. Since your blood sugar is normal, this explains why your doctor asked to do regular check-ups every year (and not every 3 months).

You can enjoy foods at parties, but do not take in reference blood sugar after attending these parties (as the reading will be always high- overloaded). Better check your fasting blood sugar and HbA1c.

Enjoy your healthy life and hope you will not have to deal with diabetes.
