QUESTION: Why does the glucose level rise within two hours of taking glyburide? Mine seems to rise about 50 or 60 points.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

ANSWER: Hi RM,

There are several factors contributing to the rise of blood glucose 2 hours after taking glyburide:

  • How do you take this drug? Usually, our doctors are recommended to prescribe glyburide as to be taken at least 30 minutes before eating.

This is because of the action of this drug: it helps the pancreas to produce and secrete insulin. As this process requires at least 30 minutes, this drug is given before the meal in order to have insulin secreted right in the time after you eat.

  • Next, are your taking any other drugs with glyburide? Certain antibiotics (i.e.fluorquinolones), hydrochlorothiazide, etc interfere with glyburide and rise blood glucose. Ask your doctor how to manage this in case you are taking any other drug.

  • Another factor could be the dose of glyburide you are taking is not working properly. Therefore, your doctor would judge to increase the dose. Ask him/her about what you are experiencing to get the best management.

  • At last, check your self glucose meter you are using. Try to clean it properly, to do the test measurement, and correctly follow the directions of the manufacturer.

Please talk to your doctor for what you are experiencing, record the blood glucose results you take for at least 1 week and present them to your doctor for the best options and to correctly control your blood glucose.

Hope it helped although in distance! All the best!
