QUESTION: I usually urinate frequently, just my checked my urine now and the color was dark. What do I take to reduce it?
ANSWER: Hi Mike,
There are many explanations regarding the problems you are facing with urine. They are related to diabetes and other non-diabetic factors as following:
- It is true that diabetes cause frequent urination due to
high blood glucose levels, which is overloading the kidneys.
Therefore, you must check blood glucose:
fasting,
2 hours after eating and
HgA1C and
glucose in the urine to determine whether you are a diabetic or not. Contact your doctor for more.
- The dark color of your urine could suggest:
1. an UTI infection, which needs urgent treatment.
2. if the color is red-dark, that means that your kidneys are really damaged due to infection or diabetes. You must check with your doctor.
3. liver or/and bile problems are associated with dark urine. You need to run liver function tests to clearly identify the origin of your problems.
Meanwhile, until you get the results from your doctor, you need to drink water to filter your kidneys. However, keep in mind that if your kidneys are damaged, the high amount of fluids will worsen your problems.
You need to take a glass of water, add 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and/or very little sugar, and drink it twice daily. This will increase the pH of your urine, alleviating the symptoms (like burning or emergency to go to bathroom).
Cut the carbs intake to see if it helps to alleviate the symptoms. Sage tea or rosa canina tea are very good to alleviate the urinary symptoms.
The most important thing to do is to run the above-mentioned test and check with your doctor the origin of your problems.
All the best!
