Dangeriously low blood sugar level

by Paul

QUESTION: Should a diabetic person seek medical attention after extreme lows? Is there any reason to get checked out if you are able to get your blood sugar back up.

ANSWER: Hi Paul,

Yes, it is extremely important that a diabetic person seek medical attention when his blood sugar test results were dangerously too low.

There are many explanations to this phenomenon:

1. The dose of the medication that a diabetic is taking might be one of the culprits, therefore, it must be changed.

2. Usually, a diabetic person is following a strict diet and lifestyle to control diabetes, therefore, this might explain too low blood glucose levels.

In this case, a diabetic should work closely to a dietitian or his/her doctor to modify the diet strategy he/she is following in order to avoid extreme low blood sugar levels.

With regards to these modifications, diabetics are recommended to eat small meal, but often to avoid oscillations in blood sugar.

3. Stress, drinking alcohol and smoking might also interfere in low blood glucose. Therefore, diabetics are recommended to avoid taking alcoholic drinks or smoking, especially when they are also taking diabetic drugs.

There could be another personal factors contributing to dangerously low blood glucose, including taking other drugs or medications or other specific diseases (e.g., cancers, etc) or conditions (e.g. infections).

Therefore, it is a must to work with your doctor to understand better your personal situation if you are experiencing repetitive episodes of extremely low blood sugar levels.

All the best!
