CHANCE OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES IN THE SECOND PREGANCY

QUESTION: I had gestational diabetes in my first pregnancy. Is there is a chance in the second pregnancy too?

ANSWER: Hi Saira,

Actually, women who have had gestational diabetes in their first pregnancy, have a tendency to get gestational diabetes in their second pregnancy; however, this is not "ABSOLUTELY TRUE".

There are some other factors that increases the chances for gestational diabetes, including:

  • the weight you gain in between and during pregnancies,

  • your weight (if you are obese or not);

  • your age (older than 30 years).

    Therefore, if you have not gained too much weight after your first delivery (it's better if you have lost weight); and you do not gain too much weight during your second pregnancy (by controlling your diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercising); then, you will have less chances to develop gestational diabetes in your second pregnancy.

    All the best!
