Can we have sweets in festivities like Diwali?

QUESTION: Can we have sweets in between? Is it OK? I am fed up with my diets. Never full, out of all festivities like Diwali when celebrations mean lots of yummy sweets. The quality of life is never the same. Susan ANSWER: Hi Susan, I understand that it is hard for you to follow all the directions provided by your doctor and to avoid all the sweets things around you. I understand also that it is hard for someone to participate in friends parties and to look at the others with jealousy while they enjoy the food, drinks, etc. However, the good thing is that you can eat sweets, like chocolate, cookies and others, but in very small amounts. It is better to give yourself this pleasure only when you have achieved very good control of your blood glucose level. Something else, which is important, is that you can eat sweets maximum once a month. During the other time, you have to follow your meal and exercises plans strictly, in purpose to compensate the possible slight elevation of your blood glucose concentration you experienced when you enjoyed your candies:)
I want to show you a secret if you want to eat sweets. The next day you have eaten chocolate or something else, you should do more exercises than usual. In this way, your body will burn the excessive amount of glucose, which you have acquired the day before.
In addition, I have to inform you that the consumption of chocolate will lead to spikes in your blood glucose level, but don’t worry about them. By doing exercise and proper diet the other times will reduce your blood glucose concentration.
By the way, I’m obligate to warn you that you don’t have to change the dose of your medications by yourself to reduce your blood glucose concentration faster.
Inappropriate dose adjustments may lead very low and dangerous blood glucose concentration, something which we don’t want.
As you can see, you can eat sweet things, especially during the famous Diwali festival. No one is able to resist the temptation of eating something sweets, when he/she is round of chocolate for five days or more.
However, remember when you eat sweets you have to double your efforts the next day in purpose to keep your blood glucose within the normal ranges. And try not to repeat the secret actions often as it will give you more damages.
Another thing, diabetics and their non-diabetic friends or relatives, can prepare a special corner for diabetic guests when they organize a party.
They can include diabetic foods, sweets, etc. in order to make them enjoy the festivity. Encourage diabetics or others to bring along such foods.
