Blood Sugar Spike?!
by Jess
CONCERN: My mom is type 2 diabetic. She is taking Metformin, and Glibenclamide. She is very greedy and sometimes breaks her diabetic diet plan, and eat certain cookies and cakes.
She has noticed, then, blood sugar spike within 1 hour after eating her non-resistant cookies. Is this possible? I mean, if she eat only a biscuit or piece of cake, is it possible her blood sugar to spike?
After normalizing her blood sugar, can it turn back to spike after that if she doesn't eat anything sugary? I am worried because she is also complaining of her legs numbing and her doctor asked to keep her blood sugar normalized.
SUGGESTIONS: Hi Jess,
I understand your situation. It is perfectly normal for diabetics to experience such "spike" in their blood sugar level after eating something sugary.
In fact, different diabetics have different reactions towards the sugary content in foods. It also depends on the severity of their condition, how much insulin her body is produced when the signal are given.
So, the best thing to do is to ask your mum to gather her strength and to resist to all those sugary "fake-yummy" cookies if she really loves her life.
She can also try to modify the recipes for the cookies or biscuits according to her diabetic condition.
All the best.
