Agave is the sweetener with the lowest glycemic index
QUESTION: I've heard that agave is the sweetener with the lowest glycemic index. It's rating is allegedly 32. Anybody know anything about this?
ANSWER: Hi,
It is true that Agave is used as a substitute of table sugar in diabetics due to its
glycemic index. This is particularly true when it comes to diabetic foods claimed as No-calories or No-carbs ones.
The problem that has flourished is related to the lack of glucose in the brain cells, which results in a cascade of metabolic problems.
According to the Glycemic Research Institute (GRI), as brain cells are supplied by the glucose in the bloodstream, when blood sugar fluctuates as high or low, then brain cells will act differently.
This is particularly true when one diabetic consumes any no-calories or no-carbs foods, which is "caught" by
brain cells as hypoglycemia, resulting in the "brain-shut-down" cascade of reactions.
At the end, one diabetic will suffer the severe consequences of
hypoglycemic episodes, which might result in passing out or even death.
Therefore, the GRI has de-listed agave and any sweeteners that contains agave as a precaution measure. At the same time, GRI has warned any suppliers or manufacturers for the this cascade of metabolic problems induced by Agave.
So far, this is all I know regarding Agave. I know that
everything that comes to nature is very useful for us. However, one must know how to properly use and the exact dose of the
natural herb.
I hope any other reader will elucidate with more relevant information.
All the best!
