11 years old son with sugar levels 4.2 mmol or lower becoming aggressive
QUESTION: Hi,
I am having problems with my 11 years old son: sugar levels they are always 4.2mmol or lower. I have been to many doctors here in Zimbabwe and Noone wants to acknowledge that this is the reason he isn’t feeling well.
I am getting desperate i need some advice on how i can treat him and what i can do to make him feel well again as this is becoming a serious issue in our life.
He has been to school about 2 weeks in the last 2 months as he is always feeling ill. He is very depressed as doctors keep telling him there is nothing wrong with him and becoming aggressive with frustration
ANSWER: Hi Lisa,
I just want to make sure that you know that the
normal blood glucose level is between 3.5-6.1mmol/l, and your son’s
blood glucose result is exactly within the mentioned values.
So, it is obviously that the problems of your son are not caused by
changes in the blood glucose concentration.
You have to know other thing: some kids are suffering from lack of parental attention and some of them are playing ill in purpose to be close to their parents.
Therefore, you have to tell him that you have spoken with a very good doctor, which is a close friend to your family and he has told you that he has a rare, but mild diseases, which can be treated with these pills.
As we don’t want to harm you son’s health, so visit the nearest pharmacy and buy several tabs of Vitamin C. This vitamin is harmless and it will improve the general condition of your son, so give him one tablet of Vitamin C in the morning and observed the result.
Another important fact during this kind of “treatment” is to start spending more time with him and to try to go to the party with him or visiting the places he mostly likes.
I just want to ensure you that your son doesn’t have mental problem or something like this, because this condition is pretty normal for children who are growing up.
Besides, remember that boys are more attached to their mother, so just spend more time with him and don’t forget to give him the “medication”.
Another point: As you said you are living in Zimbabwe, epidemiological studies indicate that intestinal parasitic infections (worms in particular) are very common in countries like yours.
So, I suggest to perform a parasitological screening of your sons feces and see if this is the problem. Usually, worms do get all the glucose and other nutrients one child needs to grow up, leading children to malnutrition, mental and behavioral changes.
Hope it helped!

DEAR DOCTOR ALBA,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY.
I HAVE IN THE MEAN TIME TAKEN MY SON TO A SPECIALIST AND THEY HAVE FOUND HE IS HAVING PARTIAL COMPLEX SEIZURES.
SINCE HE HAS STARTED TAKING CARBAMEZAPINE HIS SUGAR LEVELS HAVE COME UP DRAMATICALLY, THE HIGHEST READING AN HOUR AFTER A MEAL IS 10.4MMOL.
HE IS STILL ON THE MEND AND NOT ALL THE SYMTPTOMS HAVE SUBSIDED AFTER A MONTHS TREATMENT BUT HIS EXCESSIVE HUNGER HAS EASED WHICH WAS A HUGE CONCERN AS HE INCREASED 2 CLOTHING SIZES IN A PERIOD OF 2 MONTHS.
I AM PRAYING THAT WITH TIME THIS MEDICATION WILL HAVE HIM FEELING WELL ENOUGH TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AS HE STILL FEELS VERY RUN DOWN AND WEAK. i HAVE JUST STARTED HIM AN A COURSE OF MULTI VITAMINS AND HE HAS BEEN TAKING NOODROPIL FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLY AND I WILL KEEP IN CONTACT AS MY MOTHER HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETIS RECENTLY TOO.
HAVE A GREAT DAY
REGARDS
LISA
